about

written by Ted Pine.

"Theo" lays into some misbehaving ex or other with a subtle vengeance, and puts more dirty key click into that analogue synth clavinet patch than you might've believed possible.
This 8-track recording from the original Fort Apache South location features Joe doing a nice Steve Cropper part at the end, and Jerome Deupree laying down a fat New Orleans-meets-LA-a-la-Steve Gadd groove. Ted Pine crafted some nice analogue synth bell sounds, complimented by some fat pads and organ tones.

Joe Harvard says: "Ted had written fairly straight ahead stuff -- for him -- in the Sex Execs. The group'd had to achieve a certain balance with crowd response reality, being very much a working band, and college drinkers will stand but so much eccentric brilliance at a kegger. So Ted had written and helped write some great party music, some of the best and most intelligent party music thqat has ever come out of Boston, in fact, but now he wanted to do some other thing. This was his first band since the Execs had broken up, in the wake of losing the Rumble finals to Til Tuesday ... in which they were robbed by the way."

"So Theo was stretching out on this tune, 'Sweetheart', 'Sargasso Sea', and they were all very much arrangements, not just verse chorus stuff. "Bash" and Jerome seemed to navigate this stuff really well, having both served under Joe Morris in the Trio and done their jazz homework besides, so it was a relatively smooth transition for them. But it kept me on my toes in a major way. In the studio I could always punch in, but live Ted's songs turned out to be tricky for both myself and Dave 'Bone' Pedersen, who joined the band after we finished the LP, to stay on top of. They were of course their own reward, quirky things with such a lot of personality that I wonder whither would they have gone had the band stayed together more than a year."
