about

Joe says: "In 1986 I heard the demo that Throwing Muses had recorded at White Dog, which date I believe from 1985, and 'Sinkhole' was featured among other brilliant numbers. I wanted to do another Muses song but the chords were all too tricky for a garage guy and then I recalled 'Sinkhole' - which worked better than what I was going to try, believe me.".

Lancaster, Ohio's Eric "Strongarm" Armstrong covers the bass chair on this live version. A member of all Joe's bands while he lived in Columbus, Eric had worked with Joe at Freakin' Pizza, which later became a music venue of sorts itself, making pies, and after discovering a shared interest in both roots and moreadventurous forms of music they got together to play. One thing led to another; Eric also appears as bass player "Meig's County Weed" on the LP 'Country Eastern' .

The Country Eastern version of the track features Mark Sandman on bass -- a departure from both the Low Guitar [i.e. octaver-treated guitar] and homemade Unitar/Duotars he had been playing with Treat Her Right and Morphine, respectively, at that time. Both that version and this live cut feature Joe playing the sole 'Telecaster' version of the odd Nick Hoffman Brian Jones Model, a metal box-bodied instrument, made for him by Santa Barbara's Hoffman.
