about

1. for the player piano effect on the solo beginning at 2:10 we slowed the 2" master tape down to half speed [7-1/2 ips] & gave Brother Cleve, Ordained Minister in the Church of the Sub-Genius, all the slack we could. Cleve did the very tricky job of playing the solo 'naturally' at half-speed, & when restored to regular 15 ips tape speed his part hit the nail right on the honky-tonk "piano roll" head I was looking for.

2. I met the brilliant artist Susan Huffman while traveling 'without portfolio' on a Lifeboat tour that passed through Blacksburg, VA, where her roommate Rick, the local club's sound man, was nice enuff to put us up for the night. We all ended up drinking awful red wine & attempting to stick luncheon meats to the kitchen walls, laughing maniacally until dawn broke over the Blue Ridge Mountains -- & we all became friends for the next half decade. Later she sent me photos of Rev. Howard Finster's farm, where she would visit when passing through. A poem painted on his trash cans stuck in my head, & became the basis for this song, though not all of the poem made it into the song & my hazy recollection meant some re-ordering of lyrics. The original cover for the record was going to be Susan's photo of the trash cans
