Rick Barry - Nashville

from One Man Tornado by Joe Harvard With Friends

about

"Rick Barry called me up and said he thought he had a shot at getting the gig for the soundtrack of a new reality show called 'Nashville Stars' or somesuch, but he had no idea how to write a country song, so would I like to help out ... this turned out to be not entirely accurate, as he showed up with the verses pretty well mapped out and a turnaround chord sequence as well. I said that country songs should be about cars and guitars, working shitty jobs and wanting more, by people who have a home and mother and a dream and have to choose between those things, at times, which is why they are both sad and hopeful. He said, OK, put that into lyrics and we're done. So we did."

The afternoon spent writing at Rick's new apartment on Cookman Ave. in Asbury Park resulted in the song "Nashville", which was then recorded at One Bedroom Studio, AKA Joe's apartment over at 607 Fourth, on a subsequent afternoon. Rick plays and sings. Joe says he was going to add steel guitar "but we didn't get the gig ... enda story. I like the song though, it's a nice little narrative, I think ... and it mentions Hank Snow."
