A friend since Harvard's Record Garage days in the mid-70's, when Joe and the bones had opened shows for the Shane Champagne Band, Dave Champagne is well represented on 'Buy American.' He appears on both sides of the LP -- here on the Over Here side as vocalist on Joe's song "Marjorie", and on a pair from Pink Cadillac on the Over There side. There was additional symmetry involved in his performance which would have been apparent to local listeners (had there been any): Dave and Kelly Knapp were a couple at the time, and each sang lead on a Harvard-penned track.

Pink Cadillac was in it's twilight, and Dave was looking for a new band and a new musical direction; Joe was looking for the same things, and the So-So tracks they recorded in 1984 nearly marked the beginning of their new group together. The window of opportunity to form a Harvard-Champagne band closed, however, soon after these So-So sessions occurred, when Dave met Mark Sandman. Recognizing a stylistic ally in one another the two immediately got together to form Treat Her Right, along with Billy Conway and Fort Apache co-founder Jim Fitting. Fitting would bring THR into Fort Apache South to record their thrice-released (Soul Selects, Demon, RCA) 8-track LP, although partner Harvard's sole contribution was a tape splice on the master 1/2" 8-track tape, to adjust the timing of the band's entry after the drone introduction on "No Reason".
