about

The Flies demo LP was one of the first albums recorded at Fort Apache South. Working essentially live on the rhythm tracks, with vocals and some additional guitar added, the 8-track sessions crackled with energy, witty song-writing and Nat Freedberg's highly original guitar style. Equally at home on the Metallic Red vintage Jazmaster and matching Stratocaster he used for the sessions, Nat's guitar and fuzz-box voice were potent anchors around which the songs coalesced.

"This remains one of my favorite recordings from the Fort, despite the deficiencies in our engineering chops in those early months at South, and the paucity of equipment we had to use [or abuse]. The Flies were such a fine band, and the songs so strong that your ear adjusts to the lower-fi bits quickly and lets your brain enjoy a great rock group performing a strong set."

"Drag You Down to My Level" has become a must-hear tune at shows by Cockwalkers, a garage & power-pop group Joe plays out with on the New Jersey shore, which features all songs written in or about Boston - especially those by friends and colleagues he has worked with. Writer Nat performed it later with the Titanics; he now leads the Upper Crust. Learn more at
