about

This 8-track recording from the original Fort Apache South location features Joe on a '66 Epiphone Riviera Electric 12-string and a Nick Hoffman Brian Jones model guitar. Ted Pine programmed analogue synth piano sounds, complimented by a B3-type organ tones for this one.

"Ted, " says Joe "was bemused and enthused about the idea that eventually matured into Country Eastern, adding exotic tones and textures to garage and roots rock tunes, and he crafted his patches accordingly for the Mr. Happy record. On 'Corner' he's downright festive, it's like a sock hop in Singapore or something. Love Theo."

Harvard continues: "I used to hang out at the corner of Jeffries Street and Sumner in East Boston, and this song is pretty much the literal story of doing what you want, when you want, when you're young and shit all seems so new, before the repercussions set in and things have gotten stale. I never get tired of the line 'Sittin at my desk and drinking Tussionex' ... which is an inside out rhyme, by the way. 'Tussionics' as used is a mispronunciation favored among some old school dope fiends I knew, and using that mangling of the name to rhyme with 'Panasonic' -- when it should rhyme with T. Rex -- makes me laugh in my head each time I sing it." Tussionex is a narcotic cough syrup of which Joe has admitted some "former familiarity."

This is the second time Harvard recorded the song, and would add a third on the 500 TV LP 'All Fired Up' as well in 1988.

"Each of these bands broke up and hadn't released the records they'd done, so in '88 I thought 'hmm no one had heard 'Corner' yet' despite the '82 and '86 versions, and 500 TV had a different feel. Clark played it more squared off with 500 TV. Jerome swings it a bit more on Mr. Happy's version and Richie 'Cunningham' Madallo is uniquely Richie on the original bones version. But I'm pretty sure I'm done doing this one!"
