Burayda is an oasis many hours west of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. I passed through there with an archaeological survey team in 1981, on our way to the central desert - the Nafud. It was my first oasis ... though it wasn't midnight. I made friends with the Saudi camp manager [who'd been to U. of Michigan] Sa'adi, who took me out on our day off several times to do 'real' stuff: smoking fruit tabacco in a Sheesha in the dunes, shopping near Medina, hanging out with a group of teachers from the madrasas of the area who would meet on Sundays to play volleyball & BBQ. When I left the teachers gave me a first grade primer so I could try to learn baby Arabic, & tho' it was some years later I eventually used it to learn to write basic Arabic, a restful & enjoyable practice I recommend highly.
