about

"Bridgeport Lathe" was originally recorded by the 2x4's, a popular band in the fertile early 80's Boston scene. For many years -- maybe still -- it was a much-played cut on the jukebox at Acme in NYC. The song's writer John Hovorka is a true veteran in the indie world. With roots in the same '69-'70 Cambridge Commons scene as Jonathan Richman and Real Kids drummer Howard Ferguson, John was "there when it started" as far as Boston rock goes, and he has continued to explore new musical frontiers from a NY base for the past decade and a half.

Joe and John had known one another for years, but became friends after the former produced the Turbines exit LP 'Magic Fingers and Hourly Rates' [New Rose, 1987]. They would spend some time in the late 80's re-mixing the original 2x4's LP at Fort Apache South -- ironically, a mix attempt was made for everything on the tape BUT "Bridgeport Lathe" -- and again in 1988 Joe would travel to Williamsburg, Brooklyn NY to produce and play second guitar on an LP by John's new band Hovorka, recording at Coyote Studios in it's infant [two-offices-in-a-truck-garage-with-a-live-Ramsa-board] phase. The record, Empire State, remains unreleased although it was a great slab of rock.
