about

This is a song my band the bones covered, & which quickly became the opening number for every show we played. Though we played mostly original music there were a number of mostly B-side cover tunes we added, some like this Link Wray tune & the Hollies "Pay You Back with Interest" were basically the original arrangement, while our Fugs' covers "Group Grope" and "Couldn't Get High" were nigh-unrecognizable. The bones drummer Richie "Cunningham" Maddalo & I got together with bass player Greg Mahoney and played a handful of shows, and recorded this session of live, three-piece basic tracks at Fort Apache North not long before I left Boston for Ohio in Sept., 1990. Brother Cleve came in to add keys, using a Korg CX3. Then I started to record lead guitar parts, and rewind, and record another. I was trying to make the "Wooly Flute Tone" [Clapton with Cream, Leslie West w/Mountain, etc] meld with the rockabilly crunch thing, & get a nice Yardbird-y solo recorded. As I played I ran a cassette, pausing it after each run, so it's a 1st generation right from master tape to cassette, with 7 takes. I think I like #3. I also wooly fluted "Bridgeport Lathe" three takes that day.
