I'm workin' on high wire act It’s hard to look down, don't know how to slow down, turn around or make my way back Sister bend a knee, say a prayer for a one-eyed hungry Jack who's workin' on a high wire act Another Cathy’s clown with a circus frown and a greasepaint tear on my face Just a homeless hound runnin’ around chasing you all over the place When you're on top of the big top you're really on top of the world But when you hit the bottom of the barrel you're just another swine out lookin' for a pearl, out workin' on a high wire act, workin' on a high wire act Whooooaaaaa …. Well I'm a circus clown when I'm down but I'm the King when I got that swing You got me spinning around like a merry-go-round So dizzy can't see a thing Sister bend a knee, say a prayer for a one-eyed hungry Jack who's workin' on a high wire act. Workin' on a high wire act

about

This is a collection of JH Band demos made during practice at Little Big Horn [AKA Joe's apartment and living room in Columbus Ohio]. The latter were recorded on the former Fort Apache South Otari 1/2" 8-track and TAC Scorpion board, with Ryan's [and Harold's] drums set up in the kitchen, and the amps in the living room.
- The live material has all been taken from cassette recordings made off of the board mix.

credits

released June 1, 1993

all demo songs produced & engineered by Joe Harvard on 1/2" Otari 8-track.

Eric "Strongarm" Armstrong - bass
Ryan "the Kid" Eisert - drums
Catherine Boone - vocals
Joe Harvard - Fender Electric 12-string guitar, Telecaster, Nashville & reg tuned acoustic gtr, lap steel, pedal steel, Nick Hoffman Brian vocal

"High Wire Act" & "Katrina"were built up using the drums from uncompleted basic tracks [for "Cathy's Clown" & "Life in Prison" respectively] laid by Dave Bone's Jolly Ranchers at Fort Apache South in 1986. They feature Bob Kendall on drums; Joe added bass, guitars & vocals.
"Katrina" also features a Ranchers-era Peter Holsapple contribution: armed with the Hipshot equipped Stevencaster [a Telecaster resplendent with Steven Comics characters drawn by creator Doug Allen] he had just met, playing lead guitar on "Life in Prison" by Merle Haggard, as was accordionist Brother Cleve on the same track.

photo from Columbus Dispatch article shows Catherine, Joe & Eric holding the only Telecaster version of the Nick Hoffman Brian Jones Model metal box guitar, made for Joe by Nick out in Cali.

Joe: "After selling the Fort I retrieved $8,000 in pawns from Uncle Sam's and Lev's, but this was forgotten in yet a third pawn shop and I accidentally - and very regrettably -- left it behind in Columbus. RIP. But you can hear it on 'Sinkhole' on the LP 'Country Eastern', & on the Neats 'Crash at Crush' LP on Coyote." Joe also uses the Nick Hoffman for "Sinkhole" during the live show May 27, 1992 [AKA 'God Bless Joe Harvard, Amen'].
